The big steamers were designed in such a way that the European crew and clerical staff were accommodated on the main deck, along with some of the third-class Burmese passengers as well as light goods. The upper deck, which was shaded by an awning, accommodated the first-class cabins either side of the main saloon, with the second-class right aft. Amidships was given over to third class. Life in third class was described in a contemporary brochure:

A Burmese girl may be sitting there, doing up her wonderful hair with a tiny mirror before her, or grinding down her face powder from thanaka bark. A meal may be in progress with its accompaniment of many little dishes … and the children, eager to see each new thing, dart about in their curiosity from one group to anther …
